How do I Find an Appeal Brief Online?

In jurisdictions where appellate briefs are considered to be part of the public record, any member of the public can go to the courthouse and ask to view the appellate record for a particular case. Some jurisdictions have streamlined this process by offering searchable databases of appellate cases online.

Information on all appellate cases filed in the state of Wisconsin is available at the Court of Appeals Access Web site. Here, litigants can locate their case, review the case history, and download appellate and supreme court level briefs. There is no fee for using this Web site. New Mexico has a similar Web site, available here.

Other states, such as Colorado, do not provide a free database online. In order to access case records and information, Colorado litigants may use www.cocourts.com, but there is a fee for this service.
